The History of Safie Specialty Foods

It all began with the dawning of the great depression in 1929. As a means of providing for his family’s livelihood, Dmitri Safie started preserving the vegetables he grew on his farm in Chesterfield Township, Michigan. With his entrepreneurial foresight and his family’s love of food, Dmitri created a unique blend of ingredients necessary for success.

The Safie family embarked on this new business venture, and the business grew from the family kitchen into a large packing facility, which extended over seven acres of their farmland. The company’s success far surpassed even Dmitri’s expectations, and in the late 1980’s with retirement close at hand, the family business was sold.

Several year later, Dmitri’s granddaughter had a growing desire to bring the family tradition of canning into the 21st century. In 1994, Mary Safie started her business in the very same kitchen where her grandfather and his children began theirs.

Today, Safie’s state-of-the-art packing facility is still located in Chesterfield Township, Michigan. Obsessed with quality, freshness and time-honored traditions, Safie products continue to be hand-packed with the highest-quality ingredients, whole spices, fresh herbs and locally grown vegetables.
